Eco Office

Spread a Green Influence from the Office

With concerns of our earth’s forests and energy sources growing rapidly,BenQ commits to a green office to do our part in restoring our environment. From 2009, we not only carry out power/water conservation and resource recycling in the workplace, but also commit to the formation of a green office to create a working environment that is friendly and close to nature to let green living and technology co-exist.

Energy Management
In 2010, the total power consumption of BenQ headquarters building was 4,369.8 kWh. To conserve energy and maximize energy efficiency, we have installed T8 LED lamps with an average life of 12,000~20,000 hours. In comparison to an incandescent lamp, T8 LED lamps boast 6~10 times in illumination efficiency, with average life lasting 12~20 times longer. From 2010, BenQ launched “Eco Program” to enhance energy efficiency of headquarters building with a complete plan and action to spread out the concept of energy conservation & carbon reduction as an enterprise.

Technology × Nature × Energy Conservation = BenQ Eco Program
As an Eco-Enterprise, BenQ Eco Program is our commitment. The program includes three concepts, which are Eco Office, Eco Canteen, Eco Building. All three seek to change the way we live from the office to help the Earth improve the environmental situation.

Eco Office
Implementation of eco office is the goal of many enterprises. BenQ has formulated a series of office regulations and self-inspections for employees to establish an efficient and energy saving office.

    Office Regulations
  1. Set the temperature of the air-con at 26C to save energy.
  2. Adjust the lighting devices to 2 fluorescent tubes, which is consistent with the statutory value and reducing the carbon emissions.
  3. Decorate the office with plants to reduce the carbon dioxide and 14% to 22% of dust to improve the indoor air quality.
  4. Install water –saving taps in the pantry and the restrooms to save water.
  5. Turn off air-con of the workplace in every story of the building to save 48% of energy consumption.
  6. Set up the standby mode of the monitor and host by ITS. The monitor will be off in 10 min. without signal input, the hard disk will be off in 30 min., and the system will enter standby mode in 60 min., and enter sleep mode in 120 min. without signal input.
  7. Put duplex printing recycling box in the photocopy room to make a good use of the recycled paper.
  8. Set up containers for waste recycling & assorting, and leftovers to implement waste assortment.
  9. Stop the supply of paper towel to encourage employees to develop the habit of bringing handkerchief.
  10. Print business cards with recycled paper.
    Self-Inspection:
  1. If you will leave the seat for a long time, switch off the power of the screen
  2. Switch off air conditioning & lights before lunch break or off work
  3. Turn off the printer before leaving the office
  4. Turn off air conditioning and lights after using the conference room
  5. Re-use the file folders
  6. Take the stairs back to the office after lunch
  7. No elevator unless the interval is more than three stories
  8. Always bring a handkerchief
  9. Use your own cup
  10. Decorate one’s own desk with plants

Eco Canteen
In the process of food distribution, a lot of carbon footprint will be produced. Therefore, BenQ encourages all the staff to reduce the carbon footprint in the delivery process and economize by development of the habits on proper diet and food purchasing.

  1. Reduce transportation of the ingredients by using the ingredients from nearby
  2. Provide vegetarian meals: Greenhouse gas comes mainly from the meat-not cars. If half quantity of meat is cut off from our meal, the total volume of the Greenhouse gas will be reduced 9%; if you don’t eat meat for one day in a week, the greenhouse gas will be reduced 2.5%.
  3. Just take what you’re able to eat. Don’t waste food.

Eco Building
The design of eco building is the most effective way to save energy. On the basis of having an eco-building that saves energy, resources and reduces pollution, BenQ established a more comfortable, healthy and eco- workplace.

  1. In the end of 2010, solar-power panels had been set up on the rooftop of the headquarters. On Jan. 3rd of 2011, the solar-power system begins to operate. Estimated annual saving of 4,191 kWh, which equals the reduction of 2,850 kilograms of carbon emissions, and the benefits of planting 233 trees.
  2. BenQ Cloud install the cloud technology. In the future, 50 servers will be reduced to 6 hosts and estimated monthly saving of 20,000 kWh.
  3. Gradually replace equipments with energy-saving products

In 2010, the average power consumption of every staff in BenQ headquarters building was 3772 kWh, which is 3.5% less than the average in 2009 and 26.5% less in 2006. The result of energy conservation reached 1368.9 KWh; therefore, we won “Taipei City Energy Conservation Award” in 2009.

Water Resources Management
Believe it or not: Although it rains a lot in Taiwan, because of the topography, the distribution of water resources is not easy. As a result, Taiwan is ranked no. 18 of water-scarce country in the world. Therefore, water conservation, efficient sewage and waste water treatment are also key topics to BenQ.

Water is extremely precious in Taiwan, so we have to commit to water conservation and wastewater treatment. BenQ has become a branded company since 2007 and thus there is only the problem of wastewater from office, not from manufacturing. All water we used is from waterworks and we don’t pump groundwater.

For legal compliance, we consign testing organizations to measure our wastewater quality every year to ensure the wastewater does not impact the environment. All testing results have been lower than the discharge standards of the government.

Recycling
“Waste material is a resource placed in the wrong place.” Waste classification and recycling is our main focus. To facilitate proper classification of waste materials, we have set up different recycling areas in our office for glass, aluminum foil packs, metal containers, and plastic bottles. We also recycle wastepaper, used disks and used batteries. In 2010, BenQ collected recyclable materials up to 29.7% of all waste produced in its Taiwan office. It was 5.1% higher than 2009 and 10.7% higher than 2008.
